The Chambertin vineyard is situated on outcrops of Lower Bajocian crinoidal limestone halfway up the slope; Bajocian marls are found on these higher ground. A thin layer of scree and silt covers everything, and the soils are exclusively brown calcareous. 

It overwhelms the palate with an intense expression of violet and licorice. Its persistence is unparalleled. "This celebrated vintage possesses to the highest degree all the qualities that constitute the perfect wine: body, color, bouquet, and finesse." Classified as exceptional by Jules Lavalle in 1855
