Domaine Mont Bessay
Domaine Mont Bessay can be found on the slopes of the Mont Bessay hill in the northern part of the Juliénas appellation (with a parcel in neighbouring Moulin‑à‑Vent). This estate was established by Philippe Pascal and Guillaume Marko after a five-year partnership, aiming to bring rigorous Burgundian-style parcellaire thinking to Beaujolais. The vineyard lies on pink granite soils, facing south to southeast, which lends its wines a distinct freshness and mineral drive. Domaine Mont Bessay is compelling because it re-positions Beaujolais cru wines in a more structured, terroir-obsessed register. It’s less “fun fruit” and more serious cru Gamay with ageing potential, especially when sourced from the granite slopes of Julienas/Moulin-à-Vent and vinified with attention to whole-cluster proportion, low extraction and older oak (or neutral wood) ageing.
