Charles Mortet established his estate in 1956 with a single hectare of vines. True to the tradition in Burgundy, he sold most of his production to merchant houses. In 1978, Denis joined his father, along with his wife, Laurence. They were 22 and 20 years old at the time, respectively. Since Laurence’s family were farmers, she quickly took to working in the vineyard, much to her satisfaction. Gradually, Denis developed bottled wine sales. He succeeded his father in 1993 and created Domaine Denis Mortet. At that time, it encompassed about 4.5 hectares across the districts of Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, and Vougeot—but this was just the beginning of the estate’s expansion. In 1999, he acquired the vineyard of Chambertin Grand Cru. Today, the estate comprises 11.2 hectares. In 2000, Denis’ son, Arnaud, joined the company, and he and his mother have been in charge since 2005.

Arnaud Mortet has successfully acquired an impressive array of vineyards, creating Domaine Arnaud Mortet, which includes holdings in Charmes-Chambertin, Mazoyères-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin, Échezeaux, and Bonnes-Mares.

The wines from both Arnaud Mortet and Denis Mortet are absolute treasures and extremely limited, making them highly collectible with rising value year after year. The only distinction between these wines and those under the Denis Mortet label is the legal requirement to change the name to “Arnaud Mortet” for wines made from the new parcels. This exciting new domaine allows Arnaud to create benchmark wines with remarkable definition and texture, sourced from a wider array of Gevrey’s finest terroirs.
